| Dean Hodgson, Acting Board Chair Dean Hodgson is currently serving as acting Chair for Different Avenues. Mr. Hodgson is a senior accountant for Group 1 software and also owner of Hodgson and Associates, a human resources / accounting consultancy. A graduate of Vanderbilt University, Mr. Hodgson volunteers extensively with various organizations in Virginia, Maryland and DC. For the past 4 years, he has served as Director of Box Office for the Reel Affirmations Film Festival; Mr. Hodgson also works with Maryland Adult Education Program, which assists in English instruction and preparation for the GED and/or the US Citizenship Test. Ann Macharia Ms Macharia is currently a administrator in the Community Program at the World Bank. She brings more than 8 years in international development work and program design to Different Avenues. She is an immigrant from Kenya to the United States. Before moving here to work at the Bank in 2002 she was the Secretary and a founding member of Sourcenet 2000 a community based organization providing services to marginalized women, including commercial sex workers, in Nairobi. Sourcenet is known for organizing national and regional fora for sex workers in Africa and for providing innovative sustainable development initiatives for women in rural areas to provide alternatives to rural-urban economic migration. Ruby Bracamonte Ruby Bracamonte is a Latina transgendered advocate who brings her diverse community organizing and health promotion perspective to Different Avenues. Ms Bracamonte is a founding member of the Latina Transgendered support group "Creando Espacios/Creating Spaces" at Clinica del Pueblo, a free non-profit health services for Latinos in the Washington DC area. She is active in current issues of concern to transgendered persons in Washington DC including efforts to include gender expresssion and identity in the DC Human Rights Act. Denise Brennan, Ph.D. , Treasurer Denise Brennan is an Assistant Professor of anthropology in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. For the past ten years she has been conducting field research with Dominican and Haitian sex workers in the Dominican Republic on sex tourism. Her book on this research was published in 2004 with Duke University Press, What's Love Got to Do with It? Transnational Desires and Sex Tourism in the Dominican Republic. Currently she is researching how trafficked persons reconstruct their lives after living through extreme exploitation. Denise is the Board's new Treasurer. Maegan Marcano The newest board member, Ms. Marcano has spent years working at Unity Healthcare, Inc.; the largest community health organization in Washington, D.C., where she provides direct HIV/AIDS and substance abuse services to underserved populations. Building on working in public health for 7 years combating stigma and discrimination against HIV/AIDS and LGBT issues, Ms. Marcano is a full-time student at George Washington University, where she is receiving her Masters in Global Public Health-Health Promotion. Ebony Johnson Ebony Johnson comes to Different Avenues with extensive experience in the issues of HIV/AIDS and community activism. She has worked at Us Helping Us, People into Living, as an outreach worker and with the AIDS Alliance for Children and Families. She is currently employed at Children's National Medical Center as a community liaison. The intelligence and passion of this young woman are a great addition to the board! |
