Community victory in changing DC Human Rights Act
New law againt discrimination based on gender identity or expression
Home
The DC Human Rights Act states that no one is to be discriminated against because of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, marital status, personal apperance, sexual orientation, familial status, family responsabilities, matriculation, plitical affiliation, disbility, source of income, and place of residence or business. A new law adds "gender identity or expression" to the list. This means "a gender-related identity, apperance, expression or behavior of an individual, regardless of the individual's assigned sex at birth." Because the law is so new, many people are not aware of it. There are still many reports of harrasment, abuse, discrimination of people because of their gender identity or expression. This includes disproportionately the transgender community. It is important for people to know that this law protects EVERYONE. In order to enforce this law properly, we need to make the public more aware of the issue, so that people do not discriminate, and do not accept discrimination.
Right now, the city government is preparing regulations and policies regarding this law. It is important to ensure not only that people can file a complaint if they experience discrimination, but also that in emergencies, like dealing with the police or medical services, no one is subject to poor treatment because of their gender identity or expression. Here is a link for some talking points.
Discrimination is a huge issue that we have been fighting. But many people are afraid to report discrimination to the police in fear that they might not do anything and the harrasment will continue. If you would like to see the process of passing the law then click on this timeline. What we have to do is make the people undersrand that they can do something if they are being discriminated.
